Chocolate: A Ballad
It’s dark. It’s brown. It’s light. It’s white.
It’s one of our world’s most famous, sugary and...lethal delights.
It’s almost at every turn, when you walk on the street,
It beckons to you, with a seductive grin, “come, have something sweet!”
Something tasty that’s soft and melting,
Unlike cookies or waffles, it makes no sound like breaking
Its power is immense, its calories a might
A pack or two or three or four, can be gone, without a fight
Hardly anyone in the world is immune to its intoxicating power,
Its irresistible pull is especially felt when fatigue over you, towers
A perfect gift it makes when one visits friends
A traditional Valentine’s Day companion – or to make amends…
There’s truffles and pralines, hazelnut or cream filling
By the pound or by a gift set – how much to spend are you willing?
And if you’re a musician, who spends days within
There’s even Mozart chocolates, available in a violin

Whether as chocolate chips, frosting, or layers in a cake
It's always a good time for it - never too late
Sold in many shapes, tins, forms and sizes
In duty free shops, they are up for display like spectacular prizes
In soft, creamy whispers it calls out your name
Have you tried this new flavor? Try it, you will never be the same!
It’s been called a guilty pleasure, a danger to the waist
And certainly a vicious enemy to a teenager’s face
From Barcelona to Buenos Aires, Manhattan to LA
There's Godiva and Cadbury, Hershey’s and Nestle – your attention they try and sway
There's M&Ms and Snickers, and Mars bars and Cadbury with Oreo,
Just so much chocolate choice, it would make Willy Wonka give a hearty "whooaaa"
How about a 3 Musketeers? Kit-Kat? Is a king-size Twix Ok?
Or a family size Milky Way bar pacl, would that be helpful on your way?
Cote d’Or and Lindt, Ghiradelli, and Toblerone…
And Dagoba and Camille Bloch – the list goes on and on!
Let's not forget Tony's - chocolate bars of many sorts;
And of course, there's Ritter Sport - certainly not as a last resort...
There’s Kisses and Blisses, and Dairy Milk and Twirls
Symphony and Noir Cocoa, and many more, I’m sure you’ve heard
And even if you didn't, I'm sure it's fine by you
For all you need is a favorite or two (Not that they have to stay the same, mind you)
These were just some reflections, on the world’s most renowned confection
When the opportunity comes by…can you resist the temptation…?
